I Started breeding budgerigars
as a teenager just for fun. after joining the Scottish
B.S showing was my aim and to this day 26 years later i still
enjoy the hobby.
Q. How many birds do you Keep and breed
per year.?
My stud consists of an average
200 birds but i can keep 300 comfortably. This season so far
I've bred 80, i would like to breed 100 to 150 per
season.
Q. How big
is your Aviary & what seed do you use .?
The Aviary is breeze block
construction 24 feet long. 12 feet wide Height sloping from
back to front 14 X 9 Feet. with all the usual amenities

70% canary 30% millets, groats etc.
Q. What extras do
you feed your birds chicks.?
Well i have to admit that i
don't feed many extras as i work away from home. to make
life easy for my wife / sons, The preferred softfood
given daily is Bucktons rearing egg food mixed with water to
soften and when chicks are leaving the nest i give Japanese millet
sprays. Q. Do you
normally sell birds and what's the best tip you have been
given ?
Yes, I sell my unwanted birds
just before the breeding season starts around November 25th,
after the world show. I normally keep the youngsters
until six months old before selling. I always remember
the tip i got from Jimmy Sutherland, Only buy stock to
improve your stud when you can afford it, Needless
to say i have spent a fortune over the years even when i
shouldn't have. I've never regretted the
Purchases.
Have a nice day!
